The city of Montluçon is not to be missed, as is the beautiful village of Charroux. The castle of the Dukes of Bourbon, the various half-timbered houses, the Place de la Tourfondue or the Saint-Victor church make Montluçon a city with an undeniable heritage. As a medieval village, Charroux is one of the most beautiful villages in the department, with its half-timbered houses and authentic alleys. Hundreds of castles dot the department, and make Allier the second French department with the most castles! We recommend the château de Billy not far from Moulins (13th century fortified castle), as well as the château de Veauce, or the fortress of Le Hérisson. We recommend that history lovers take the historic route of the castles of Auvergne, which will take you past the gates of 46 castles (divided into 6 different circuits).
