What to visit in the Rhône?

As the capital and main city of the Rhône, Lyon is one of the largest cities in France. Lyon has had a particularly rich history for 2000 years because of how active and important the city was during the Middle Ages. The "Old Lyon" is particularly well preserved. The districts of "Vieux Lyon", "Croix Rousse", and "Fouvière" bear witness to the richness of Lyon's heritage, and have even been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These neighbourhoods contain a wealth of history, old stones and various beautiful monuments to discover. The internationally renowned Lyon Opera House is one of the must-see visits. While in Lyon, we recommend that you travel a few kilometers outside of the city itself to discover the "Ile de Barbe", a true haven of peace on the banks of the Saône, or the "Miribel Jonage" park and the many activities it offers.
The Rhône is a dynamic department and is regularly punctuated by major events each year. The Fête des Lumières attracts thousands of visitors who come to admire the illuminated scenographies projected on Lyon's great monuments. The "Beaujolais Festival", which is there to celebrate the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau, also brings together many people on Place Bellecour (the largest square in Lyon), and even extends beyond the borders since this festival also takes place in Japan and Australia!
Other beautiful places to visit in the department include Sainte Croix en Jarez, a beautiful village in which you'll find beautiful buildings and architectural structures.

When to go to the Rhône?

You'll be able to choose when to go to the Rhône depending on whether or not you like warm or cold weather, but also depending on how you handle big crowds. We advise you not to choose the summer period if you want less tourists on the streets.
