The beautiful village of Vézelay welcomes many pilgrims every year. Its basilica Marie-Madeleine is the village's main point of interest, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In summer, several concerts even take place there! Vézelay also offers a visit to its museum on modern art (the Zervos Museum), as well as a visit to the house of the writer Jules Roy.
The village of Tonnerre is an original feature in the region. Indeed, the oldest hospital monument in Europe is located there: the Hôtel-Dieu founded in the 13th century. Another unique feature: Tonnerre was built around the mysterious Dionne pit.
Auxerre, the capital of the Yonne, is a city of art and history to visit without hesitation. Its many museums, its church Saint Pierre en Vallée, its cathedral Saint Etienne or its abbey Saint Germain are monuments and places not to be missed.
While in Yonne, we also recommend that you visit the castle of Guédelon. The castle of Guédelon was born from a crazy project, from a real challenge to build a fortified castle with the techniques and materials of yesteryear. The project began in 1997 and would be completed in 2022. A real medieval construction site that takes us back a few centuries.
The department also has several swimming points for the summer, especially around the Bourdon Reservoir.
There are also many hikes, to mention only the hikes from Sens, Villeneuve sur Yonne, Joigny, Tonnerre, or Arcy sur Cure.
