The department of Indre-et-Loire is particularly rich in historical monuments, and for good reason as you are in the region of the Chateaux de la Loire, once the court of the kings and queens of France! Located in the Centre-Val de Loire region, the department hides some of the most unique sightings in the country, and HomeCamper is here to help you find the perfect outdoor garden to stay in!
The city of Tours, capital of the Indre et Loire, is particularly lively, especially with its many markets that punctuate the week (flower markets, second-hand clothing stores, flea markets, local products and many others). Tours also houses several exceptional buildings, such as many Gallo-Roman remains, including the Castrum wall, remains of ancient terms and the underground galleries of the Fine Arts Museum, which can be visited. The imposing Basilica of Saint Martin or the Cathedral of Saint Gatien are also absolutely worth seeing!
Several beautiful villages are part of the wealth of Indre-et-Loire.
The village of Crissay sur Manse will surprise you with the ruins of its castle or its Saint-Maurice church. Montrésor, located 60 km from Tours, regularly attracts visitors who come to see its beautiful castle. Candes-Saint-Martin has many historical monuments, such as its collegiate church or its feudal bridge. Finally, Loches, the capital of Touraine, stands out with its 36-metre high keep, its Saint-Antoine tower, its Saint-Ours collegiate church and its Logis Royal!
While in Indre-et-Loire, you will also be seduced by the many castles of the Loire Valley, such as the Château de Gizeux, Luynes, the elegant Château de Villandry and its exceptional gardens, or the fairytale Château d'Ussé known as the Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant.
Nature is also very present in Indre-et-Loire. The Loire-Ajou-Touraine regional nature park includes more than 140 municipalities and is dedicated to preserving the heritage. Beautiful walks are to be done on the Island of Rochecorbon (which also has a beach) or on the island of La Métairie. The Parc de la Pommadière, 39km from Tours in the heart of the Chinon forest, is ideal for family picnics and outdoor activities.
Finally, several water activities are proposed in Indre-et-Loire.
The Loire, Indre and Vienne rivers flow through the department. The Etang de Louroux, which covers about fifty hectares, is appreciated for its fishing.
In order for you to enjoy rather warm weather during your stay in Indre-et-Loire, we recommend you to choose the months from May until September. The temperatures will be more suitable and there will be less risk of important rainfalls during that period!
