What to visit in the department of Loiret?

The city of Orléans is the capital of the department. First known for having seen Joan of Arc die in her old market square, Orléans has a very rich heritage. Its Saint Croix Cathedral is the French cathedral with the oldest remains and has therefore witnessed countless events over the centuries. The basilica of Cléry Saint André, the Minimes convent or the Carolingian Oratory are some of the other monuments to visit. We also recommend that you visit the St Paul district or the Place du Chatelet. While in Orléans between the end of April and the beginning of May, you can attend the Johannine celebrations that celebrate Joan of Arc's entry into Orléans in May 1429, which she later rescued from the English.
45km from Orléans, the small village of Yèvre le Châtel is worth discovering because it is one of the beautiful villages in France to visit.
Its fortress and its 4 towers, its ramparts, its numerous churches, its marked paths in the Rimarde valley attract thousands of walkers every year.
The Loiret also has several castles of the Loire, including the famous castles of Gien or Sully.
Loiret is also a land of nature and offers many walks. The Etang de la Vallée extends over 70 ha and offers a supervised beach in July and August. Water activities are possible such as canoeing.
The Etang des Iles is located 6 km from Montargis and offers a beautiful panorama. The nature reserve of St Mesmin or the Bonny Islands are also to be discovered!

All year round, you can visit and admire the magnificent castles of the Loire Valley, the museums and the various monuments. The Loiret is a real cultural mine.
