What to visit in the Ardennes?

There are many walks to do in the Meuse valley, especially in Revin or Rocroi, which offers 38 signposted routes. Starting from Monthermé, there is no shortage of walks and hikes, especially to discover the Monthermé loop (which is a loop made by the Meuse, a real unusual setting!).
The capital of the Ardennes, the city of Sedan shines with its fortified castle built in the 15th century. The largest medieval fortress in all of Europe, Sedan Castle has no less than 7 floors and covers 35,000 square metres. The Sedan Botanical Garden, a real breath of fresh air, promises beautiful walks to meet the hundred-year-old trees. The carpet factory at Le Point de Sedan is worth a visit, as it showcases a unique know-how and presents high-quality handmade carpets.
The city of Charleville-Mézières is also one of the major cities of the Ardennes. Its Ducal Square (the most important square in the city) is very similar to the place des Vosges in Paris. The city walls and the Basilica of Our Lady of Hope are to be discovered, as is the Ardennes Museum. Mount Olympus, for its part, offers beautiful walks along the banks of the Meuse, as well as many activities and leisure activities. Charleville-Mézières also hosts a big festival that takes place every year : Le Cabaret Vert.
The Ardennes also has several important historical buildings, which bear witness to its history. The Château de Bazeilles, built in 1750, is worth a visit, especially for its decorations and sculptures. The ruins of the castle of Montcornet, located on the "Mont Cornu", are among the highlights of the Ardennes, as is the 16th century castle of La Cassine, where many sound and light shows take place.
Finally, the Saint-Didier church in Asfeld is an unusual visit to make. Of baroque architecture, this church has a total of 138 columns and pillars!

When to go to the Ardennes?

Just like most departments in the North, the Ardennes and its oceanic climate are used to constant rainfall throughout the whole year. That is why we advise you to pass through the department during the months of July and August. These months might seem like obvious choices, but they'll prevent you from full on rain and will provide you with warmer temperatures.
