What to do in the Bas-Rhin?

The city of Strasbourg, capital of the Bas-Rhin, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and has even been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Its Petite France district is particularly picturesque: canals and half-timbered houses meet to offer unique scenery in France. The Notre Dame de Strasbourg Cathedral, right in the midst of the city, is worth a visit with its particularly well preserved stained glass windows!
The maison Kammerzell, with its typical architecture, offers its visitors many Alsatian specialities. The church of Saint Thomas, the Orangery Park or the botanical garden of Strasbourg are to be seen. The city also has many museums, including the zoology museum and the Alsatian museum.
The beautiful village of Mittelbergheim is an authentic village, with winegrower's houses. Visiting its oil mill and its wine-growing and conservation museum is particularly enriching. Hunspach is yet another beautiful village worth seeing, with its half-timbered houses being so typical of Alsatian architecture.
Several castles also make up the historical heritage of the Bas-Rhin, such as the ruins of the medieval castle of Haut Barr, the remains of the castle of Ortenbourg dating from the 13th century, those of Wineck castle or the magnificent castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg (built in the 12th century and having a 62m high keep!). Finally, Mont Saint Odile (764mètes d'altitude) and its convent, a true place of pilgrimage, are worth visiting. The pagan wall, classified as a historical monument, surrounds the Mount for 11km and is one of the unusual things to discover!
Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate the many marked trails, GR and short hikes offered by the department, such as the Maginot Line trail, the Gros Chêne trail or the Saarland trail.
