What to visit in Calvados?

Calvados, like the department of Manche, is known to have seen the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944.
A stroll through Omaha Beach is a must, as is a visit to the many military cemeteries, including the German cemetery in Saint-Désir, the British cemetery in Saint-Manvieu-Norrey and the Polish cemetery in Urville. The Pointe du Hoc site displays its German fortifications. The artillery batteries of Mont Canisy in Benerville-sur-Mer present their bunkers and turrets. As you probably noticed, history lovers will have a packed holiday! The department also has several castles, including the château de Fontaine Henry and the château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet, a beautiful 15th century castle with red bricks arranged in checkerboards and a preserved moat.
Another page of history was also unveiled in Calvados, with William the Conqueror. His castle located in Falaise dates from the 12th century. Its Talbot tower, its small keep and its chapel are to be discovered.
The city of Caen owes the construction of the Ducal Castle, the Abbey of the Ladies and the Abbey of Men (the abbey in which he rests today) to William the Conqueror . Caen is a city rich in history, with superb churches, including Notre-Dame-de-Froide-Rue or Saint-Michel de Vaucelles church. While in Caen, we recommend you visit its sculpture park or its floral park on the "Colline aux oiseaux".
The city of Lisieux is also worth a visit. Its Saint-Pierre cathedral, its art and history museum or its Hippolyte domain, which will introduce you to the Normandy region, are the main points of interest.
The beautiful village of Beuvron-en-Auge yet another visit not to be missed, with its halls, half-timbered manor house and Saint-Martin church.
Calvados has many seaside resorts, such as Honfleur, Ouistreham, Ver-sur-Mer or Deauville. Known for its cinema festival, its 2 racecourses, its beach, its golf course and its villa Strassburger, Deauville is one of the most popular resorts.
Calvados also has many natural areas, making it also an ideal destination for green tourism. The Bois de Breteuil for example, a few kilometres from Honfleur, covers 120 hectares and offers beautiful walks.
Lake Dathée, although swimming is not allowed, many birds can be observed, for all the ornithology enthusiasts out there!

When to go to Calvados?

Calvados, just like most departments in the Normandy region, can be a better experience when visited during the right season. The departments warmer and more pleasant months in terms of weather and temperatures go from July until October. If you don't like the cold, avoid the month of February as it is usually the coldest month of the year. However, we would advise vanlife enthusiasts to choose the months of May and June, as there will be less tourists to bother you during your stay!
