What to visit in Sarthe?

The Sarthe is an ideal destination for an outdoor holiday.
The department is particularly wooded and is ideal for hiking, or mountain biking, especially in the forest of Bercé. The Sarthe and its 4000 km of river also offer nice and cosy walks to do along the water (including along the river from which it takes its name). Activities such as fishing or kayaking are also appreciated in the area.
The castles and religious buildings of Sarthe are witnesses of an important historical past. The castle of Bazouges sur Loir surrounded by water, its garden and its peaceful setting, the castle of Courtanvaux in Bessé-sur-Braye, the castle of Lude or that of Lucé are part of the heritage of the Sarthe. The department also has beautiful abbeys to visit, such as the abbey of Solesme or the abbey of Epau.
The city of Le Mans, the tourist capital of the Sarthe region, has several museums such as that of Queen Berengère, or the Tessé Museum. Le Mans is also a city of history and home to beautiful monuments such as Saint Julien Cathedral, the Gallo-Roman enclosure visible from the banks of the Sarthe and Roman baths. About twenty kilometres from Le Mans, the Massonnière garden will offer you the opportunity to relax in its green setting and its beautiful paved paths.
The village of Ferté-Bernard is also a must-see in the region. A small tourist train can take you on a tour of the village and its historic buildings. The beautiful church of Notre Dame des Marais, the "Saint Béalet" halls, the Saint Lyphard Chapel or the half-timbered houses are the highlights of Ferté-Bernard.
Asnières sur Vègre is also a very pretty village, pleasant with its old houses, where you can walk on its old bridge and admire the various sightings.

When to go to the Sarthe?

With its warm oceanic climatic, you'll be able to visit the department pretty much throughout the year, however you'll appreciate your travel most during the warmer months. We advise you to plan your visit around the months in the summer, around June, July and August!
