There is no cell reception in the mountains. Make sure you have reviewed all of your information stored online and have made appropriate plans before heading out to the property.
If you would like to have a fire, please either bring your own wood or collect/cut/chop deadfall. DO NOT cut or damage any live trees.
We have two indigenous varieties of poisonous snakes (Copperhead and Timber Rattlesnake). Do not put your hands where you can't see and watch where you step especially around old rotting logs/stumps, wood piles, and rocks. If you find a snake, leave it alone.
We have poison oak and poison ivy as well as stinging nettles along the river. Learn to identify and avoid these plants.
A high tension powerline cuts through the property and serves both as a fire break and an access road. When near it on humid days, sometimes you can hear it crackle, which is normal.
The setting
The scenic property nestled in the mountains of West Virginia and is wrapped by the Cacapon River. You can enjoy high mountain views or hike to the river valley and enjoy the creek and river. The majority of the property is forested, but the area opened by the powerline easement makes for easier access throughout the property and unobstructed views.
The spots
The primary ridge line campsite has nice level areas for pitching a tent and an established fire ring. The area offers gorgeous 360 degree views of the surrounding Allegheny Mountains. The campsite is very private, but it's possible you will see a friendly neighbor pass by on the trail or see folks staying at the cabin in the valley along the river flats if you go down to the river.
The property offers numerous other locations to set up camp along the river, by the pond, in the forest, and overlooking creeks and hollows so if the primary site is booked please email for alternative site options.
You will need a four wheel drive vehicle to access the ridge line campsite. If you do not have a four wheel drive vehicle or during severe inclement weather (snow or heavy rains), you can hike in from the state road where the access road begins. If pulling a trailer, the trailer must be small and the vehicle powerful enough to pull the camper up steep access roads and across a shallow creek.
The sanitary facilities
The campsites are primitive and have no running water. You must bag out all garbage and waste. Cat holes and such are not permitted so campers must bring and use a camp toilet.
The amenities
The campsites are primitive. You must be prepared to bring all supplies to include water and bag out all trash. Water from streams, the pond, and the river is available in the valley, but must be purified.
The activities
If relaxing on the ridge line and enjoying the views are not enough, hike down to the river via the powerline cut or trails and swim, paddle your canoe or kayak, or fish (WV license required...one day passes are available online). You can also hike the creek running through the deep hollow, which follows the state access road while enjoying dark Hemlock woods and shale cliffs. If you like to mountain bike, you will find the mountain access roads and trails offer you some back country riding fun. The trails are equally fun for horse back riding or ATVs. During the winter when snow is heavy, you can snow shoe or cross country ski the trails.
