Description

Relax, enjoy the sunrise water views, and recharge in this peaceful oasis on a quiet corner of Chincoteague Island on the peaceful Eastern Shore of Virginia. This delightfully quaint, residential location is perfect for the nature buff who knows how to make the most of a small island setting. Pelican Roost boasts great water views of the Assateague Inlet Channel and sits right where the famous Chincoteague ponies cross the channel every July for the Pony Penning and Fireman's Fundraising Pony Carnival. A small, quiet campsite is nestled under gorgeous pines perfect for stargazing, relaxing, and enjoying the abundance of nature that surrounds Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Biking distance to everything the island has to offer. Walking distance to fishing pier, kayak launch, seafood market, sunset views. Camp amenities include access to plenty of clean, potable water with an outdoor shower and portable, waterless toilet, firepit with screen and lid, bike and gear storage, camp chairs, electricity, and charcoal grill are included. Ice, firewood, and charcoal are available for sale. Well-tended dogs are welcome on leash.

The setting

Down a clamshell drive you'll find a safe, quiet, peaceful campsite that is small, but perfect for a tent or conversion van. Camp on grass under aromatic pines for daytime shade. Then build a fire in the pit at night while enjoying awesome stargazing. Listen to the sounds of nature day and night including song and shore birds, owls, foxes, ponies, and if the wind is right you can hear the ocean waves crashing on Assateague Island just across the channel.

The spots

The activities

Nature is what draws people to these famous barrier islands. From wild ponies, turtles, Seka deer, foxes, mink and dolphins to bald eagles, glossy ibis, osprey, great blue heron, tundra swan, and piping plover visitors are never disappointed by the flora and fauna of these islands. Both Chincoteague and Assateague islands abound with all types of outdoor activities from pristine, natural beaches on Assateague, wild ponies in the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge where the famous Pony Swim and Penning take place in July to nature tours and world famous bird migrations. There is surfing and boogie boarding, a guarded swimming beach, nature trails on both islands for exploring, family friendly games and attractions, a water park and outfitters that rent kayaks, paddle boards, bikes, scooters, and golf carts. Amazing seafood, baked goods, and cuisine of all types are readily available either from your own daily catch or in the many restaurants and eateries on Chincoteague. Twice a week there is a local farmer's market and several seafood markets open daily in-season. If you need to recharge your bodily batteries you will find both massage and chiropractic services available. This is an artist's hub so live music is always happening somewhere on the island. The night life is friendly and family oriented with the hours of operation closing down earlier than big cities. Wonderful walking tours, Misty of Chincoteague tours at the Beebee Ranch, and the Chincoteague Museum provide historic background on this amazing area. The Island Theatre hosts retro and contemporary movies and entertainment every weekend.
