What to visit in the Haute-Pyrénées?

The Hautes-Pyrénées is a region particularly well known because of the city of Lourdes, a place of pilgrimages, prayers and spirituality that brings together thousands of visitors from all around Europe and beyond every year.
The castle of Lourdes, as well as the many castles of the department, such as that of Sainte-Marie or that of Neste, its abbeys (notably that of Saint Savin) and its towers such as the tower of Genos or that of Moulor, make it a department with a lot of history to tell!
The Hautes-Pyrénées offer nature lovers unique landscapes to discover.
The Pic du Midi (accessible from a cable car), a place to observe the sky, offers an exceptional panorama of the whole Pyrénées. Beautiful hikes are to be made to the Neouviele nature reserve, dotted with beautiful lakes (such as that of Orédon or Caderolles) as well as in the valleys of Aure or Louron.
There are many exceptional places where nature performs its show in the department: the Gavarnie circus is a good example! The chasms and caves are just as numerous in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
We can mention the Grotto of Gargas and its prehistoric paintings, the Medusan caves and its boat trip on the underground river, or the cave of Betharram, impressive and on 5 floors.
Sports enthusiasts will love the Col de Tourmalet, well known in the world of cycling, or its 9 winter sports resorts for skiing, but also for sled dogs and a whole host of other activities.
The department also has 8 balneotherapy centres for relaxing moments, such as Aquensis in Bagnères de Bigorre. We also advise you to immerse yourself in the world of horses by visiting the National Stud located in Tarbes.
